The Forbidden city is the ancient Chinese Imperial Palace that served as the home of the emperors from the Ming and the Qing dynasty. Built from 1406 to 1420, this sprawling 7,800,000 sq feet palatial complex was declared a Wold Heritage site in 1987 and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. The name "Forbidden City" referred to the fact that nobody was allowed to enter or leave this walled city without the emperor's permission (Info from Wikipedia).
